Conference in European Parliament

CAN WE AFFORD THE CURRENT MODEL OF MEDICAL INNOVATION?

TOWARDS NEW MODELS OF INNOVATION

18th of November 2010, 9:00 to 13:30

Room JAN 6Q2

The present financial crisis and growing public debt has crippled the
ability of many governments to pay public health care expenditures of
which the high cost of medicines is a major factor. At stake is
health of millions of Europeans and citizens of developing countries
who cannot afford access to advanced medical treatment. The present
model of biomedical innovation based on the monopoly of a few large
pharmaceutical companies is gravely flawed and prohibitively expensive
for much of the world´s population. New viable models of affordable
medical innovation are being developed by experts and need to be
considered by the European Union.

Eva Joly MEP, The Greens/EFA, Thijs Berman MEP, Progressive Alliance
of Socialists & Democrats and Carl Schlyter MEP, The Greens /EFA on
behalf of the
European Parliament Working Group on Innovation, Access to Medicines and
Poverty-Related Diseases
