URGENT: EP vote at 15:00 to bury ACTA or not

La Quadrature du Net – For immediate release

Brussels, March 27th 2012 - This morning, the "international trade" committee of the EU Parliament decided to hold a vote today at 3PM on whether to refer ACTA to the EU Court of Justice. Since the Commission has already announced that it would make its own referral, the only effect of the EU Parliament referral would be to delay a final "yes or no" vote on ACTA for at least 18 months. On the contrary, if the Parliament refuses to refer to the ECJ, it will be able to vote on ACTA over the summer.

"If the EU Parliament gives in to these technocratic tricks, it will give up on protecting EU citizens. Enough is known about ACTA to justify working towards its rejection without having to wait for the opinion of the ECJ. Delaying the debate rather than have the courage to engage with the political issues raised by ACTA would completely undermine the democratic standing of the Parliament.", said Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson of the citizen advocacy group La Quadrature du Net.
