Pharmaceutical Innovation, Incremental Patenting and Compulsory Licensing,
by Carlos Correa, Research paper 41, South Centre, 2011.

This paper contains some of the findings of a research project conducted in
Argentina, Brazil, India, South Africa and Colombia on pharmaceutical
patents. It is available at
http://www.southcentre.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1601%3Apharmaceutical-innovation-incremental-patenting-and-compulsory-licensing&catid=41%3Ainnovation-technology-and-patent-policy&Itemid=67&lang=en
.

The paper provides information on the number and type of granted patents in
different periods in those countries and highlights some the problems found
(e.g. lack of transparency, evergreening patents, proliferation of ‘Markush’
claims).
