13 March 2013, Delhi: Members of Delhi Network of Positive People, other
state level networks, treatment activists and civil society gathered today
in front of the European Commission headquarters in New Delhi to highlight
the harmful IP and investment provisions that remain on the table for
negotiations in this agreement that will jeopardize access to affordable
generic medicines – including medicines to treat HIV – produced in India
and exported around the world, placing lives at risk. See the press release
issued at

In a sit in (dharna) in front of the two gates of the EC headquarters, DNP+
repeatedly requested the EU ambassador to India to come out and meet people
living with HIV who had travelled long distances to raise their concerns.

However first refusal came on the grounds that there was a security threat
from the PLHIVs. After some time the EC officials insisted that the EU
ambassador would only come out to meet if the PLHIVs were moved behind the
police cordon several hundred metres from the front gate.

Despite making way, space and assured police protection, the EU
ambassador *João
Cravinho *refused to finally come out.

The several hundreds of people living with HIV were sitting in the hot sun
for more than three hours till they were arrested and taken away after the
EC insisted that the Delhi police had to move them from the front gate. A
video of the protest can be seen on the blog
