US senator pushes USTR on pharmaceutical access

Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont socialist, has urged United States Trade
Representative Michael Froman to support a request by the poorest countries
at the World Trade Organization to extend a waiver exempting them from
enforcing international intellectual property obligations, including drug
patents and data protections, for the purpose of gaining access to
affordable drugs.

The waiver will expire January 1, 2016, and the European Union has thrown
its support behind extending it for an indefinite number of years.

The U.S., on the other hand, opposes the extension, according to Sanders
who in a September 28 letter cites conversations between his staff and USTR.

WTO countries are expected to decide on the waiver at an Oct. 15-16meeting.
