Last week the American Thoracic Society, Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative, HIV Medicine Association, Infectious Diseases Society of America, Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders USA, TB Alliance, and Treatment Action Group sent a letter to Congress asking for key fixes needed for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Priority Review Voucher (PRV) program for neglected diseases. Amendments to the NTD PRV program could help ensure that the program effectively accomplishes its goal of incentivizing the development of new treatments and vaccines for neglected diseases, and that new neglected disease products awarded lucrative priority review vouchers are made accessible and affordable to those who need them.
To address the current flaws, this Congressionally-mandated program must be amended by Congress. As the PRV program for neglected diseases reaches a ten-year anniversary this year, Congress has another opportunity to fix the neglected disease FDA PRV program to enable it to better deliver for NTD innovators and for people affected by neglected diseases.
Full letter and more details on the program, existing loopholes and how they could be addressed available here: https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/sites/usa/files/global_health_groups_ask_congress_to_fix_the_fda_prv_for_ntds_web.pdf
