Webinar: New technologies for neglected diseases: what is likely to come
out of the pipeline, what is missing, and what will it cost?

Tuesday 20 November | 4:00pm-5:00pm CET

Gavin Yamey <https://globalhealth.duke.edu/people/faculty/yamey-gavin> is
Professor of the Practice of Global Health and Public Policy and Director
of the Center for Policy Impact in Global Health based at the Duke Global
Health Institute, Duke University, USA

Developing new health technologies for neglected diseases: a pipeline
portfolio and cost model <https://gatesopenresearch.org/articles/2-23/v2>

Many medicines, vaccines, diagnostics and other health technologies
urgently needed to fight diseases that predominantly affect people in
developing countries - the “neglected diseases” - have not been developed.
Recognizing that market incentives alone would not drive adequate
investment in R&D, alternative approaches to neglected disease innovation
were launched over a decade ago -- and some initiatives are now bearing
fruit. However, key questions remain unanswered: will current efforts be
enough to generate the needed innovations? Are we investing enough? What
gaps are likely to remain, and what can be done?

Dr. Yamey will present a recently published study that estimates the costs
to develop a wide range of health technologies for 35 neglected diseases.
He will explain the methodology used to estimate costs of the current
candidate products, as well as additional resources needed to deliver a set
of priority “missing” products that are unlikely to be delivered by the
existing pipeline.

Who should consider attending?

Those interested in learning more about:

- The cost of R&D for development of new health technologies,

- How current initiatives for neglected disease research are faring,

- Global health financing gaps

- R&D policy

- Global public goods for health

What should you expect to hear?

*- *An overview of an R&D cost modelling tool (Portfolio-to-Impact or P2I)

- An estimation of the cost to move forward the current candidates through
the innovation pipeline and how many products are likely to be delivered in
the next 10-12 years.

- What will be the “missing priority products” that are unlikely to be
delivered by the current pipeline and how much more it will cost to deliver

Additional Information: There is a call for applications
by TDR/WHO to support research using the Portfolio-to-Impact R&D modelling
tool to analyse a portfolio of health R&D products for global health.
Deadline for submission: 23 November 2018.

Participants will be able to pose questions orally and in writing during
the webinar, and the speaker will respond to a selection of these during
the second half of the event. Recordings of all webinars will be made
available online after they take place.

We hope you will be able to join us for this exciting presentation. This
event is part of the inaugural webinar series of the Knowledge Network for
Innovation and Access to Medicines, a project of the Global Health Centre
at the Graduate Institute of Geneva.

Suggestions for speakers and topics for future webinars are welcome at
