> Executive Director, South Centre
> There is a need to address, on an urgent basis, the conservation and sustainable use of marine genetic resources in areas beyond national jurisdictions. The development of an international instrument under the Convention on the Law of the Sea may provide a framework to fill the gaps in the current international regime. There are, however, many legal and technical issues and differences among countries that reflect asymmetries in the capacity to exploit such resources. This lecture will address these issues and discuss the way forward to create a fair and effective international framework on the matter .
