KEI Briefing Note 2020:4 Selected Government Definitions of Orphan or Rare
Diseases

An agenda item for the WHO’s 148th Executive Board Meeting in January 2021
is access to medicines and vaccines with the emphasis on rare or orphan
diseases and expanding access to effective medical treatments for cancer.
In preparation for this agenda item, KEI is preparing a series of related
briefing notes.

The first of these briefing notes concerns selected government definitions
of rare diseases. The definition of rare diseases often influences which
drugs qualify for orphan drug incentives.
