[Ip-health] US Patient Petition Calling for Reduction of Gleevec Price

For the first time that I am aware of, an individual patient with CML
has started a petition on change.org calling on Novartis to lower the
price of Gleevec in the US. It's notable as a reflection of the growing
economic desperation here, although there are some clarity issues around
the petition's messaging on dynamics of price controls. The
already-high, formerly global price has climbed sharply upward in recent
years, and coincides with privately insured patients being now forced to
shoulder much more of the cost themselves, increasingly impossible for
so many. Informal survey shows that the retail price of an average
monthly dose of 30 - 400mg tablets seems to now be in the US $6000-
$7500 range.

Timing of the sharp price increase is notable too as the expiration date
nears for the original US patent.
