*Debate in the House of Representatives of the Australian Parliament on
access to medicines and gene patents*

On the 24th June 2013, the House of Representatives of the Australian
Parliament heard debate over the Intellectual Property Laws Amendment Bill
2013 (Cth).

Melissa Parke (ALP) gave a thoughtful speech on gene patents and access to

The bill was passed through the House of Representatives by a vote of 72 to
68.

The ALP bill was supported by a number of the cross-benches - including
Adam Bandt of the Greens; the rural independents, Rob Oakeshott, Tony
Windsor, and Bob Katter; and the independents Andrew Wilkie, and Craig
Thomson.

The Coalition opposition were against the Bill.

The debate over the Intellectual Property Laws Amendment Bill 2013 (Cth)
will now move to the Senate, the Upper House of the Australian Parliament.
