Pharma pushes sign-on letter for patent reform exemption

6/26/15 5:14 PM EDT

The drug industry is circulating a sign-on letter in the House to build
support for a pharma carve-out from a streamlined process for challenging
patents, a key issue stalling a major patent reform bill in that chamber.

The Innovation Act passed the House Judiciary Committee with strong
bipartisan backing earlier this month, but it did not include the provision
demanded by drug makers that patents for FDA-approved drugs be exempted
from the inter partes review process. That process was created in 2012 to
help the tech industry combat patent trolls.
