WTO Public Forum
2nd October (Friday) 9.00-10.30am
Room S3, WTO Headquarter Building, Geneva
Organized by UNAIDS, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Peoples? Health
Movement (PHM) and Third World Network
Adopted 20 years ago, the WTO-TRIPS Agreement brought about significant
changes to the standards of intellectual property protection, with far
reaching consequences for the pharmaceutical sector.
At this panel speakers will discuss developments that have taken place
since the adoption of the TRIPS Agreement and the challenges and
opportunities in the context of access to medicines and public health
innovation. This includes information about the use of the 2001 Doha
Declaration on TRIPS and Public - a landmark achievement for addressing
the relationship between IP and public health. The session will also
examine intellectual property trends within the health sector since the
adoption of the TRIPS Agreement as well as what the future holds for
public health innovation & access to affordable health products.
The panellists will also specifically address the issue of the
pharmaceutical transition period for least developed country Members of
the WTO and non-violation complaints, which are current pressing issues to
be addressed at the upcoming TRIPS Council meeting.
