Symposium on Human Rights and the Social Determinants of Health, 4-5 May 2017

Despite growing recognition of the need to advance the social determinants of health as a question of human rights and social justice, there is little clarity on what human rights norms, strategies, and actors offer in advancing discourse and practice in this area. Join the Comparative Program on Health and Society as we bring together some of the world’s leading scholars and practitioners to explore these questions at an international symposium. We are honoured to begin the symposium in the evening of the 4th May with a keynote lecture by the incomparable Professor Amartya Sen (Harvard University), followed on 5 May by a full day conference.

Keynote address: Professor Amartya Sen, ‘Health and Human Rights’

Keynote Date and Time: May 4, 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Keynote Venue: Adel Sedra Auditorium, Bahen Centre for Information Technology, 40 St. George Street

On 5th May, we will host a full day symposium exploring the contribution of human rights to the social determinants of health. Symposium speakers include: Sofia Gruskin (University of Southern California), Walter Flores (Center for the Study of Equity and Governance in Health Systems, Guatemala), Veronica Magar (World Health Organisation) and Suzanne Stewart (University of Toronto)

Symposium Date and Time: Friday, May 5 from 8:00am-5.00pm

Symposium Location: Sam Sorbara Auditorium, 81 St. Mary Street
