DNDi statement on world health days

DNDi welcomes and supports Brazil's call for a World Chagas day.

Chagas disease, which affects more than six million people worldwide, was discovered 110 years ago. Yet fewer than 10% of people have been diagnosed, and very few receive treatment. Both drugs for treatment were discovered 50 years ago, must be used, improved, and new ones developed.

For years, people affected by Chagas have demanded a World Chagas Day.

Recently, researchers and organizations working to fight the disease, including DNDi, signed the Santa Cruz Letter calling for increased efforts to eliminate Chagas. Among the measures was a World Chagas Day. Today, we renew their request

World Health Days are important to increase visibility. The neglect of populations with Chagas is shared by those suffering from the 19 other diseases on the WHO NTD list. The lack of awareness, and clinical experience, in NTDs, highlights the need to raise awareness for all NTDs.
